The UK industry standard of measurement is very precise. At an independent test facility the door is subjected to consistent sound waves across the spectrum of frequencies and the average result is then adjusted in a standardised manner because the human ear is not sensitive to every sound. We all know that dogs hear higher pitched noises than humans do.
Each acoustic doorset will have different characteristics at different frequencies so selecting the best solution is not necessarily simply about the high levels. About Our Acoustic Doors
Door Frames
Acoustic doors have seals to stop sound penetrating around the door edge and they will often have an automatic drop seal to seal the gap underneath so most of our sound proof doors are pre-hung in an appropriate frame and they must be fitted as a complete unit. Every door is made to order so size is not a particular issue and there are plenty of options for door and frame finishes.
Walls, Ceilings and Floors
When you have a noise problem you should remember that sound travels through walls, floors, ceilings and structural supports so you will need to give these areas some thought.
Glass Panels
Glass vision panels can be incorporated with some limitations. Fitting a glass panel in an acoustic door has an impact on the performance, so the size and the type of glass matters. This is especially important if the door needs both acoustic and fire certifications.
Fire Resistance
Our acoustic doorsets come with fire rated protection, with a range of doors offering 30 minutes up to 120 minutes of fire resistance.
Sound Levels On Site
A weighted sound reduction value on site (DnT,w) cannot be directly compared with Rw indices because on-site measurements are influenced by factors which are controlled for R2 measurements under laboratory conditions (or do not apply). What dB rating do I ned for acoustic doors in a hotel, school or office?
It depends on the purpose of the room in question. As a working guide, hotel guest rooms are commonly specified at 30–35dB, general offices and standard meeting rooms at 35dB, and classrooms at 30–35dB, with music or SEND spaces rising to 40dB+.
Confidential meeting rooms, consultation rooms and premium hotel suites usually move to 40–45dB. We manufacture acoustic doorsets from 35dB upwards, so a higher rating comes from the same bespoke build rather than a separate product.
Can acoustic doors also be fire rated?
Yes. As all our doors are custom made, we can manufacture acoustic performance and fire performance into the same doorset. We manufacture bespoke doorsets with acoustic ratings from 35dB and fire resistance from 30 to 120 minutes, so a single order covers both compliance strands and avoids conflicts between ironmongery and seals.
What’s the difference between a 35dB and a 45dB acoustic door
It is a 10dB step, which the ear typically hears as roughly half as loud – but the practical gap is wider than that. At 35dB, raised voices next door are audible but rarely intelligible, which suits general offices, meeting rooms and many hotel bedrooms.
At 45dB, loud speech is largely inaudible, which is why it suits confidential meeting rooms, consultation and medical rooms, music practice spaces and premium suites. We build bespoke doorsets from 35dB upwards, so you can match the rating to the room rather than over specify the project.
Does an acoustic doorset include the frame?
A doorset is the complete tested assembly: door leaf, frame, seals, threshold and ironmongery, supplied together as one system.
That is essential acoustically, because sound leaks at the perimeter. A high performance leaf hung in an untested frame with generous tolerances will not deliver its rated acoustic performance. We manufacture every acoustic doorset to order as a complete unit, so frame, leaf and seals come from one tested build rather than being sourced separately and assembled on site.
