Types of flush doors

In our last article we introduced flush doors, including the different designs they can have and what they’re used for.  In this article we’re covering the different types of flush door.

Interior or exterior

As with most types of door, flush doors can be internal or external.  The basic design will be similar, but obviously if the door is for external use it will be strengthened for security and to handle exposure to weather.

Standard or non-standard sizes

Most modern houses feature standard door sizes, being 762mm wide and 1981mm high (and just in case you think these are fairly random measurements, if we revert from Metric to Imperial we get 2’6” wide and 6’6” high!).

Here’s a table of some of the more common door sizes:

Metric (mm) (W x H)

Imperial (inches) (W x H)

Imperial (feet) (W x H)

915 x 2134

36 x 84

3 x 7

864 x 2083

34 x 78

2’10” x 6’10”

838 x 1981

33 x 78

2’9” x 6’6”

762 x 1981

30 x 78

2’6” x 6’6”

686 x 1981

27 x 78

2’3” x 6’6”

610 x 1981

24 x 78

2’ x 6’6”

Some older properties may have slightly varying sizes, so make sure that you measure the frame correctly (or ask an expert such as a carpenter).  You’ll also need to check the width as well, which will usually fall in the range 35 – 40mm; (fire doors, by their nature, will be thicker – at least 44mm).

Various finishes

A range of finishes are usually available on flush doors, which include:

  • wood veneer
  • laminate (plain, pattern or woodgrain)
  • painted
  • glazed screens
  • glass openings

and as with other parts of the door specification, completely customised doors are available if you select the right supplier.

Uses of flush doors

We saw last time that in addition to what we might describe as “normal” or everyday uses, flush doors can also be used for more specialised purposes such as:

  • fire doors
  • acoustic doors
  • X-ray doors

We’ve covered fire and acoustic doors in considerable detail in previous articles, but haven’t touched on X-ray doors before.  These are lead-lined and should therefore be installed wherever X-rays are in use (such as hospitals, doctors, dentists, universities and so on).  They can also be provided with vision panels.
