The main functions of exterior doors

The main functions of an exterior door – it might seem to be quite an obvious detail to point out that an entrance and exit point to a building is the main use of an exterior door!

There are, however, other equally important aspects and features to consider when selecting your exterior doors – safety, security, shelter, privacy and protection amongst them.

Here are some details of the important functions of exterior entrance doors:

Provide safety for people and building contents

The main function of an exterior door, other than an exit and entrance point, is provide safety for the people and the contents inside the building. This security aspect is vitally important – any entrance doors must be robust, and the body of the door must be able to withstand considerable force, as well as having an effective security system of locks and bolts.

In many buildings of age, the doors may well not be strong nor secure enough to withstand any reasonable force in breaking them down – and in many of these doors, if still containing the original glass, this is probably not toughened or strengthened glass and is, therefore, easily broken and the door breached.

More modern composite doors offer far greater protection and, where appropriate, are manufactured with incredibly tough glass. These composite doors are extremely strong and offer much greater security to those inside the house and act as a genuine deterrent to would-be intruders.

Entrance doors should be durable

All entrance doors need to be durable – they need to offer protection from intruders, as mentioned, but also the elements! These doors need to provide safety and protection from rain, wind, heat and cold alike – and composite doors are the most durable on the market.

Efficiency both in use and insulation

By efficiency, I am not just referring to the doors providing practical egress to a house or building but to also act efficiently from an energy aspect. Everybody now looks to make their houses as energy efficient as they can, through various insulation methods and by reducing any loss of energy through ill-fitting windows and doors and areas of draught.

People today want their homes to be energy efficient, not just from a money-saving aspect but also to practically contribute to the environment by minimising their environmental footprint. Ensuring your house is environmentally friendly through fitting efficient and effective composite doors, can be a real bonus to those on low-incomes and the elderly population, from both financial and comfort aspects.

Should impress any visitors

Another aspect to consider for your external doors is a perhaps a less practical one, but nonetheless important – how it looks!

Your front door is likely the first thing anyone will notice about your property, so it is important that it looks attractive, well maintained and stylish – composite entrance doors are available in many styles, designs and colours and can give your property the ‘WoW’ factor to impress any visitor to your door!
