The Importance of Fire Door Frames

When you are having new fire doors fitted, it might be tempting to overlook the need for specialist door seals and frames; after all, it’s the door that is the important part, right?

Wrong. The frame of the fire door is just as necessary as the door itself in preventing fires from spreading, because it plays an integral role in keeping smoke and heat contained in a single area within a building. This is why buying a door frame from the same company who manufacture the door makes sense: the two parts of the construction must work together flawlessly.

The material, weight and thickness of a fire door frame will depend on the fire protection required. For an FD30 setup, i.e. fire doors which guarantee to limit a fire to a particular section of a building for a minimum of 30 minutes, it is normally possible to choose between softwood and hardwood construction materials. As the fire protection timing requirements grow to FD60, FD90 and FD120 (protection from smoke and fire for an hour, 90 minutes, and two hours respectively), hardwood becomes more necessary as the density of the wood increases.

When a fire door is being installed, it is important that it is well sealed to limit the escape of smoke or heat in the event of a fire. If there are any gaps at all between the frame and the surrounding wall these must be filled in, for safety reasons. This is also why it is vitally important to use the correct kind of fire door frame. A mis-matched door and frame will not close correctly and will offer protection to individuals and property that is minimal, at best. There is no substitute for peace of mind, and making absolutely sure that your door frames are as good as the doors themselves, and that they have the correct measurements, are built from the right material and are the precise size necessary is the only way to ensure that your business or property is complying with the law and offering you the best possible defence, should the worst happen.

The fact that we build our fire doors and frames in-house means that at Enfield Doors we are ideally placed to cater for properties and buildings where doors made to standard measurements would not be suitable. Our ability to custom-build our products to match your circumstances means we will be happy to talk you through your options so that you are extremely happy with the finished product.

Because we manufacture our own fire doors and frames we can ensure the best possible fit, with guarantees that if you buy from us, the doors we build and install for you will obey the relevant laws and withhold both smoke and fire for the agreed amount of time. This can be anything from 30 minutes up to two hours, and the care we take in not just expertly crafting these products, but also in installing them with skilful precision, will fill you with the confidence you need in a supplier of such vital safety equipment.
